*ABOUT

MATTEO DE CAMINADA (he-him, 2001, Bozen-Bolzano, Italy) is an interdisciplinary artist and curator working primarily with sculpture and installation. He graduated in architecture; his practice moves between spatial design, curatorial work, and activist engagement. His work articulates a clear artistic and political position, interrogating entrenched social conventions and normative ideological structures while advancing gestures of subversion toward more progressive and equitable futures. He lives and works between Italy, Austria, and Germany.

STATEMENT

Art is inherently political. When it ceases to be, it risks becoming mere ornament. We inhabit a world defined by urgent, compounding injustices, and I believe the artist carries both a duty and a distinctive capacity: to bring critical discourse to audiences far beyond the boundaries of the art world.

My practice is grounded in this conviction. Working primarily through sculpture, installation and text, I examine how social norms, ideological structures, and systems of value are internalized. These works serve as sites of inquiry, material investigations into the mechanisms that shape collective life and constrain individual freedom.

Yet I refuse to limit my voice to institutional contexts. Art that remains exclusively within gallery or museum walls risks speaking only to those already within the conversation. It is therefore not only strategic but necessary to engage with media and platforms conventionally considered outside the art world: press, social media, and public discourse.  As active extensions of artistic practice. I use every available medium to bring my positions, and the problems I identify in contemporary society, to audiences who may have no interest in art as such, but who need to encounter these questions regardless.

My practice takes a clear political and artistic stance: it challenges entrenched social conventions, interrogates restrictive ideologies, and advocates for a more inclusive and equitable future. It draws from situated experience, including queer subjectivity and affective memory, and responds directly to the social conditions I move through. The result is a form of activism that operates simultaneously through objects, language, image, and presence.
